A delegation from the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), which includes both former and current parliament members from Southeast Asia, visited the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday morning, September 2.
The delegation first arrived at Camp 16, where they met with Rohingya community leaders and newly elected members of the consultative council. During the meeting, current president Syed Ullah stressed that “international cooperation is urgently needed to ensure safe repatriation and freedom for Rohingya refugees who remain detained in countries like Malaysia.”
The delegation, consisting of eight members, was led by former Malaysian MP Charles Santiago. Other members included Malaysian MP Ong Chen, Thai MP Rangsiman Rom, former Philippine MP Raul Manuel, and others.
During their visit, the delegation also interacted with Rohingya women and youth representatives and observed activities at the Rohingya Cultural Center in Camp 18.
Earlier on Monday, September 2, the team met with Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mizanur Rahman and held discussions with representatives of the United Nations and humanitarian agencies.
After completing their programs in Ukhia, the delegation will travel to Dhaka on September 3 to meet with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
